A True War Horse

With the movie “War Horse” coming out at Christmas I thought this video by a young lady in UK might be enlightening for many of us. This video is a quick summary on the use of horses in WW1. An astounding fact that six million horses were sent to war but only 65,000 horses returned. That is around 1% of the horses sent returned home after service for their country.

The story behind the story of “War Horse” is how author Michael Morpurgo came to write from the horse’s perspective. First, in 1975 he had a conversation with a veteran of WWI in a pub. The veteran told him about his experience with horses during the war, how he would feed the horses and spend time talking to the horses because he felt he had no one else with whom he could talk. That conversation started Morpurgo’s research into the history of horses during WWI.

The second piece of the puzzle came as Michael and his wife opened a center for children to come from the city to their farm outside of London to experience life on a farm for a week. One time a young boy came to spend a week with them but the teachers let them know this one boy would not speak and not to push him or he would become hysterical. Toward the end of the week Michael found him in the stables talking to a horse telling her of his days activities and hopes and dreams. It was then that he knew the perspective of his story must be told through the war horse’s eyes, listening to the hopes and fears of all those who took care of him. He saw the magical connection between man and animal and understood the power of transformation this connection can make.

Michael wrote this book over 30 years ago and has only sold a few thousand copies a year but it seems that now is the time for this story to be told. I don’t know about you but I will be in line somewhere when this movie comes out.

If you go see this movie this Christmas season Please come back and leave a comment.

I loved the movie, but also want to read the book now. The movie was not told from the horses perceptive, but it was a great movie. Tear jerker for sure. I had no idea so many horses went out to war, I hope there is a memorial somewhere for them.

War Horse was a humbling story of horse/human relationships. Both in war and in the heart.
Couldn’t wait to get home and hug my horse;)

    Hi

In your first Video above, NO mention was made to the 100,000′s of Glow worms used in the Trenches for the reading Maps etc.! I do NOT jest about Glow worms being used thus! RIP

Have just read the book, War horse, which is GR8! Hoping to see the Play when it goes on tour in the UK!

This is an amazing film that delivers nothing less than true Steven Spielberg heartfelt drama. This is a story that all walks of life can relate to – whether you are a horse lover or not, you will be captivated by this moving story of perserverance and hope. A little graphic at times and puts you in the trenches with the incredibly brave young men and the amazing horses that served during WWI.

Having just watched that brief footage, I am sitting here in tears. How lucky for the horse that most of us own them for pleasure, not for our survival. The history of horses owned by mankind does not seem to be happy or glorious. Black beauty’s story was miserable and portrayed a time in history. Horses in NYC used to drop dead duing summer heat. Though horses are happier with a purpose, I am glad that for many horses the pupose now is as a trail horse or a lesson horse, show horse etc . Far better than the health issues and PTSD caused by a war experience.

War Horse was a wonderful movie. Greatly done by Speilberg as usual. The ending was different from the book’s ending, but it was fine. The movie was not told from the horse’s perspecitive as it was in the book. I highly recommend this movie to everyone.

Thank you for sharing the historic video. As always, God’s gift of horses to mankind in all his fallen-ness speaks of a grace – both of God and of horses – that leaves me speechless.
