Degrees…

Recently I was reminded of an idea that I heard over 30 years ago. Tony Robbins called it “millimeters” I first heard it as “degrees”. He gave the illustration of driving a golf ball. If you are just millimeters off when you strike the ball, it goes off in the wrong direction. The idea is that if our approach is off by just a couple of degrees then no matter how much effort you put in you will not reach your desired destination.

Pat talks about “the little things that make a big difference”. It’s the same idea. Sometimes if we make a small adjustment it makes a big change in the person and the horse. Maybe your position is off by a few inches or your timing is off by just a hair, but to your horse it makes a big difference.

My encouragement to you is to realize that in some cases you might be 99% there but it’s that last 1% that makes the difference. It may be that extra ounce of effort or that extra second that makes all the difference in the world to your horse or for anything in your life for that matter.

I found this video on you tube the other day and thought it would be appropriate. It talks about the same idea just in a slightly different way. It’s called 212 Degrees.

Please leave a comment and let me know what you think.

I think this post is very inspirational! Knowing that I might only be 1% away from my goal is a lot nicer than thinking I might never get there! And it helps reinforce the fact that undemanding time is NOT a waste of time (contrary to what the predator in me thinks).

And nice pick of video. This one certainly has an interesting concept. I really like your blog, too, by the way. More Parelli Professionals should have one!

I like the idea of 212*. It is a non-linear way of saying 100%, which we’ve all heard and now tend to misunderstand and/or ignore. Thanks for sharing.

    Jerry:

I love the concept of a ‘thinking horseman’. You inspire us to reach deep inside ourselves and our horse’s self to learn the lessons and listen to what the horse is saying. There is so much to learn and so little time. I am anxious to continue my horsemanship journey each day. Thank you for your inspiration.

Awesome video. Highly inspirational!! I have experienced this whole concept in my exploration of riding on several levels, but one in particular comes to mind: In our sacroiliac (SI) joints, each ilia glides only 3-4 mm back and forth across our sacrum. If one of our SI joints is stuck or blocked it will actually prevent our horse from being able to turn in the corresponding direction when riding. Many people don’t realize this and think there is a problem with their horse (as I did). They have no idea that such a minute amount “stuckness” in their body, which they may be totally unaware of, can cause such a big problem.
Yes, I am a Movement Education geek, but I just had to share that because it is so relevant to the point you are making.
